I buy food from the AH because I have a ton of dragons and usually enough money to make it worthwhile to buy one thing in bulk to convert rather than wasting a bunch of gathering turns on it.

What I look for when I buy food is large amounts at or lower than the price I could get if I bought smaller quantities. If people are selling individual items (I assume for buyers reselling to Crim) for 250t each I look for bulk auctions where 50 items are 12500 or less. I also look for items that have the most food per unit, I will pay more and be more likely to buy items that are 5-7 food per unit than 2.
